Recent progress in wireless local area network (WLAN) technology has made it possible to realize real-time vehicle-to-vehicle data communication. A WLAN-based real-time data-link was developed based on a Nokia C021 wireless LAN card to support vehicle-to-vehicle signal exchange. The two modes of continuous transmission and burst transmission were developed to satisfy the special requirements for transmitting different types of information. The initial evaluation in laboratory verified the feasibility of using a WLAN-based data-link in supporting off-road vehicle automation application. This data-link could transmit/receive designated data string at 1 Hz rate. Field evaluation of this technology is needed to test its reliability and safety before using this system to support actual off-road vehicle automation.
